How to change wake word on your Amazon Echo smart speaker

While you cannot set your pet’s name as the wake word for your Echo smart speaker, you can set ‘Amazon’, ‘Echo’, or ‘Computer’ as the wake words.

Amazon Echo smart speakers are some of the most popular smart speakers in the market right now. This can be ascertained from an eMarketer research, which says nearly 70% of the smart speaker users in the US are using Amazon Echo. If you have ever used Amazon Echo before, you would know that the smart speaker comes to life when you use the wake ‘Alexa’ to summon the company’s virtual assistant.

But did you know you can change the settings in Amazon’s Alexa app such that your Echo smart speaker responds to three more wake words other than ‘Alexa’?

While you cannot set your pet’s name as the wake word for your Echo smart speaker, you can set ‘Amazon’, ‘Echo’, or ‘Computer’ as the wake words.

Here’s how you can add more wake words to your Echo smart speaker using the Alexa app:

Step 1: Open the Alexa app.

Step 2: Go to the More menu at the bottom right part of the app.

Step 3: Select Settings and then select Device Settings.

Step 4: Select your device then scroll down and tap wake word option.

Step 5: Choose the new wake word from ‘Alexa’, ‘Amazon’, ‘Echo’ or ‘Computer’ and you’re good to go!

But if you don’t want to take the long route and follow these steps, you can use voice commands to change the wake word. All you have to say is, “Alexa, change the wake word” and follow the instructions / prompts to change it.
