We end up deleting WhatsApp messages for plenty of reasons - they could be because of typos or because you sent a message to the wrong person. And unless managed to read them right before they were deleted by the sender, or you managed to glance at the notification before you opened the app to find it deleted, there's really no way you can retrieve these. WhatsApp has no official feature that can help you retrieve deleted texts, but there is a hack. Please note, this hack works on Android only, it will not work for iOS users.

How to read deleted WhatsApp messages

  1. You need to head to the Google Play Store and download an app that helps you keep a tab on notification history. Some reports recommend Notisave as it has the most number of downloads and legitimate reviews.
  2. Once you have installed this app, grant it all the permissions it needs to function. For example, Notisave needs access to read notifications, photos, media, and files. You also need to toggle the auto-start option on.
  3. Once it is on, the app will start keeping track of every notification you receive, including those for your WhatsApp texts.
  4. Now, even if the person who has sent you the message deletes you, you will be able to read it through the app. This app also lets you read notifications you might have unintentionally or mistakenly swiped away.

While this does make things easier, these apps have a few drawbacks. For example, with Notisave, you need to deal with ads if you are using the free version. The paid version comes for 65/month so you need to decide if these deleted messages are important enough for you to spend that money every month. Besides this, apps like Notisave can only recover simple text messages, any media file including GIFs, images, and videos cannot be retrieved.

WhatsApp has a window period of seven minutes given to users to use the “Delete for Everyone” feature on chats. If you do not delete a message within seven minutes then you can just delete it for yourself. This applies to both group chats and one-to-one chats.
