Apple iOS 15 brought tons of new features to millions of iPhones across the globe when it arrived last month. Apart from a completely redesigned notification panel, iOS 15 also brought FaceTime improvements, which includes SharePlay and FaceTime Link, Spatial Audio, redesigned Maps and Safari apps, a smarter Photos app and stronger privacy settings among others. iOS 15 also brought a feature called Focus Modes to iPhones.

For those who haven’t updated their iPhones to iOS 15 yet or those who haven’t explored this feature yet, Focus Modes lets you customise your phone’s settings so that you can focus on a task at hand. Such as you can customise your iPhone’s settings to focus on workout, work or just sleep. One of the good things about iOS 15’s Focus Mode feature is that in addition to using the system default focus modes, iPhone users can also create their own focus modes as per their needs. Furthermore, they can also customise the existing focus mode as per their requirements. So, here is a detailed description of how you can use Focus Modes in your iOS 15-powered iPhones.

How to turn on a Focus

Step 1: Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Go to Focus subsection.

Step 3: Tap a provided Focus option — like Do Not Disturb, Personal, or Sleep — then turn on the Focus.

Step 4: After you choose a Focus, select options like Allowed Notifications, Time Sensitive Notifications, and Focus Status.

Step 5: When you set up a Focus, you can select Allowed Notifications from people and apps. You can also enable Time-Sensitive notifications from apps, which allows apps not in your allowed list to send notifications marked as Time Sensitive.

Apple says that when you set a Focus, the icon appears in the status bar and on your Lock Screen, and your status is automatically displayed in the Messages app. When people try to send you a message, they'll see that you’ve silenced notifications, but they can still notify you if it's urgent.

How to set up a custom Focus

As mentioned before, iPhone users can also create a custom Focus to concentrate on a particular activity. Here’s a step-by-step guide for the same:

Step 1: Open the Settings app and then go to the Focus sub-section.

Step 2: Tap on Add button option, then tap on Custom or browse additional options.

Step 3: Now enter a name for your Focus.

Step 4: Choose a colour and an icon to represent your Focus, then tap Next.

Step 5: Customise the options for your Focus.

How to allow time-sensitive notifications

iPhone users can also turn on Time Sensitive Notifications to allow people and apps to notify them immediately. Here’s a step-by-step guide for the same.

Step 1: Open the Settings app and then go to the Focus sub-section.

Step 2: Select the Focus, then tap Apps under Allowed Notifications.

Step 3: Turn on Time Sensitive.

You can also allow certain contacts to reach you in the event of an emergency, even when you have a Focus set up. Here's how:

Step 1: Open Contacts and select a contact.

Step 2: Tap Edit, tap Ringtone or Text Tone, then turn on Emergency Bypass.

Step 3: Tap Done.
