Twitter may not be the most popular social networking platform, but it certainly is the most widely used microblogging platform and sees a lot of user activity – not all of that activity can be pleasant, considering the large number of trolls online and the challenges of moderating a large platform like Twitter.

However, if you’ve had a bad experience on the platform, do not lose hope. There are several ways to shield yourself from unwanted attention on the platform, and you do not have to make your profile private to achieve that. Let’s take a look at how you can power up your filtering and muting skills on Twitter in a matter of minutes.

Advanced filter will remove (most of) the trolls

Twitter allows users to decide exactly how they want to be notified when someone tweets tagging them or retweets their tweets. You can achieve this by going to Settings and privacy > Notifications > Advanced filters. The first option is “You don’t follow” which stops notifications from anyone who you aren’t following on Twitter. You will still see their tweets on your home feed, just not in your notifications.

Advanced filters are useful to narrow down who can send you Twitter notifications.

If the “You don’t follow” setting is too drastic for your liking, you can also choose to turn off notifications from people who don’t follow you, people with a new account, and people who haven’t changed their default profile photo. Two other powerful categories you can enable to disable notifications from are - people who haven’t confirmed their email and people who haven’t confirmed their phone number, commonly the case with most troll accounts.

Muting words you don't want to see on Twitter

If filtering notifications isn’t good enough, you can also stop Twitter from showing you certain tweets altogether with the help of the “Muted words” function. These are not only useful for stopping abusive trolls, but can also be used to keep spoilers at bay, such as the recent leak of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier thanks to Apple. You can mute topics like #WandaVision or Stranger Things or even no “nuclear” with the term Marvel --- the same goes for any abusive words that are directed at you.

You can also specify a duration for the muted words, or simply mute them permanently.

In order to turn on “Muted words” you will need to head over to Settings and privacy > Content preferences > Muted > Muted words > Add. Keep in mind that adding words to this list will not only stop them from showing up in your notifications but also block them entirely off your home feed as well. If you suddenly notice a lack of tweets about your favourite politician, you may want to check your muted words for any additions you may have recently made.
