The MacBook Air M2 was one of the biggest announcements at the WWDC 2022 Keynote event, marking the arrival of the M2 generation of chips. Soon after all the announcements were done, Apple India revealed the price of the MacBook Air M2 in India, and sure enough, it was a shocker for many. Unlike the previous MacBook Air M1 that started at a price of less than Rs. 1 lakh, the new model carries almost the same price as a 13-inch MacBook Pro. Along with that, the MacBook Air M1 also gets a price hike of Rs. 7,000.
Sure enough, the MacBook Air M2 introduces some much needed upgrades over the original model, the display being one of them. However, take a closer look and it seems that target audience for the MacBook Air will still find the older model a much better deal than the M2 model. In fact, for the sensible ones, the MacBook Air M2 does not take any sense, considering all that it offers.
Wonder why? Take a look at some key pointers.
We take a look at some of the key areas where the MacBook Air 2020 model is almost as good as the 2022 model.
Apple boasted the M2 chip to be faster than the M1 chip, which was obvious. However, the gains aren’t that great, other than the GPU performance. Hence, for most regular folks who need a Mac for basic computing, or coding, and light graphical work, the M1 MacBook Air still has enough performance onboard to offer. Those seeking a beefier machine for video editing should consider the 13-inch MacBook Pro.
Despite all the upgrades and the new chip, the new M2 MacBook Air has the same battery life figures as the M1 MacBook Air — up to 18 hours. Hence, those looking for a long endurance laptop will be happy with the older model.
Other than the new MagSafe charging port, the M2 MacBook Air has two USB-C Thunderbolt ports and a headphone jack — the same as the M1 MacBook Air.
Nobody buys a MacBook Air for professional work and hence, the display just does the job of being a nice display for work and computing. The M2 MacBook Air gets a Liquid Retina (LCD) display with 500 nits of brightness and slimmer bezels on the top, which is achieved by the camera notch. The M1 MacBook Air has the same kind of panel and with its slightly thicker bezels, the viewing experience is unlikely to remain unchanged.
The new M2 MacBook Air gets a big design upgrade in-line with the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Hence, you get the squared off sides, the notch display, a refreshed keyboard layout, and some nice new colours. The M1 MacBook Air is still the sleeker looking laptop of the two here, with its sharp edges that remind us of the original MacBook Air. Of the two, the M1 2020 model still looks more futuristic in profile.
This is where the M1 MacBook Air hits the ball out of the park. Considering the differences between the M1 and M2 models are little, getting the M1 MacBook Air at a starting price of Rs. 89,490 on Amazon is a bargain; not to forget the several associated bank discounts. The M2 MacBook Air starts at a whopping Rs. 1,19,900 for the base 8GB/256GB 8-core CPU/GPU model on Apple Store Online. Why spend so much extra on a mildly better MacBook Air M2 when you can have a stellar deal on the old M1 MacBook Air?
