Apple may ship most flexible OLED phones in 2021, estimates a research firm

As per a new report coming from research firm Stone Partners, reported by TheElec, it is estimated that there will be a total of 1.39 billion smartphone shipments in 2021. This year, the number is said to reach 1.26 billion. However, that’s not the news. What’s interesting is that while LCD phone shipments will be around 793 million, OLED phone shipments will be 597 million. As per the report, Apple may ship 160 million OLED iPhones in 2021. That’s said to be an 80% increase from the estimated 90 million. This also results in more than 50% of total flexible OLED handset shipments.

In addition, it has been mentioned that Apple’s increased use of flexible OLED in its iPhones will result in shipping of more flexible OLED screens than rigid OLED screens for the first time. As for the other companies, the report states that Samsung and Huawei ship 90 million, and 8 million flexible OLED smartphones next year. And the reason for Huawei’s low number is because of the limited sales due to the US ban.

On the other hand, companies like Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo will also contribute a chunk in flexible OLED smartphone shipments. While Xiaomi and Oppo are said to ship 18 million OLED phones, Vivo could touch 12 million units in 2021.

It has been for the first time this year that Apple has launched four iPhones in a single series will all of them sporting XDR OLED Retina screens. Previously, this screen tech was limited to just ‘Pro’ models.
