Corning unveils Gorilla Glass Victus, its toughest glass for mobile consumer electronics

Corning Incorporated on Thursday announced the launch of Gorilla Glass Victus. The company claims Victus is its toughest Corning Gorilla Glass for mobile consumer electronics so far. The glass can be used for smartphones, laptops, tablets and even wearables.

Samsung will be the first company to launch a product with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.

In lab tests, Corning said, Gorilla Glass Victus achieved a drop performance up to 2 meters when dropped onto hard and rough surfaces. It pointed out that aluminosilicate glasses from other glass companies typically fail this test, even when dropped from less than 0.8 meters in height.

Corning claims its Victus has even beaten Gorilla Glass 6 to deliver at least twice the improvement in terms of scratch resistance. Compared to other aluminosilicate glasses, Victus is said to have 4x better scratch resistance.

“Corning’s extensive consumer research has shown that improved drop and scratch performance are key components of consumer purchasing decisions,” said John Bayne, senior vice president and general manager, Mobile Consumer Electronics.

The company said that it had analysed feedback from over 90,000 consumers to conclude that the importance of drop and scratch performance has nearly doubled in seven years. It said that durability has become one of the important purchasing factors in the top smartphone markets of the world - the US, China, and India.

“Instead of our historic approach of asking our technologists to focus on a single goal – making the glass better for either drop or scratch – we asked them to focus on improving both drop and scratch, and they delivered with Gorilla Glass Victus,” he added.
