iOS 16 HAS Always On Display in the works! Could be iPhone 14 Pro exclusive

iOS 16 is indeed going to get Always On Display! A report from 9To5Mac says that it has found references to the Always On Display feature within the codes of iOS 16. The feature is likely in the works and could be an exclusive feature for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max as previous leaks and rumours and suggested. Not that the Always On Display is a revolutionary feature but Apple is seeming to take on the army of Android smartphones with this feature. iOS 16 itself is an attack on the customisation aspect that Android is known for.

The report says that within the codes of the iOS 16 Developer Beta 1, there are references to the iOS 16 Always On Display feature. “Within iOS 16, there are three new frameworks that have been added that relate to backlight management of the iPhone’s display. Backlight management is a key aspect of enabling an always-on feature,” says the report.

iOS 16 has Always On Display references

Moreover, the hidden flags inside iOS 16 suggests that Apple engineers can use to enable the always on display feature, even one devices that are not supported. Hence, Apple engineers and developers will be a able to test out the Always On Display feature on models such as the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, which theoretically can support Always On Display with their variable refresh rate feature.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said that the Always On Display will debut on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the models that are getting some mega changes this year. These iPhones will also lose the notch in favour of a display cutout for the True Depth camera system. The Pro version are said to use a LTPO 2.0 panel that can reduce the refresh rate to 1Hz in the AOD mode.

Theoretically, Apple could also bring the same the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, which can reduce the refresh rate of the display to 10Hz. However, it could affect the battery life, and Apple would want the gimmick to sell more iPhone 14 Pro models instead of people sticking to the older iPhone 13 Pro.

Always On Display has been on Android phones for years, even when variable refers rate displays weren’t a thing. The feature has been known to be a battery hog, and most users in general turn it off to get extra battery juice. The Apple Watch Series 7 and Series 6 support Always On Display for now.
