iPhone 14 Pro could borrow a feature that has been present on the Samsung Galaxy flagships since ages! At the moment, high refresh rate displays are all the hype in the world of smartphones, with even affordable smartphones now offering up to 144Hz refresh rate. Apple gave in to the trend last year by introducing its ProMotion displays on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The display had a variable refresh rate range of 10Hz to 120Hz, which was cutting edge in 2021. This year though, some upgrades are expected on this front on the iPhone 14 Pro.

Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, says he is “expecting” the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to feature an upgraded variable refresh rate feature, wherein the variation happens between 1Hz to 120Hz. Ross himself says it isn’t confirmed yet but there seems to be a high chance, considering all of Apple’s rivals have been using the new LTPO 2.0 panels on their flagships.

Flagships from Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Xiaomi are using LTPO 2.0 panels that offer the refresh rate variation between 1Hz to 120Hz. This not only makes everything appear smooth but takes less strain on the battery life.

iPhone 14 Pro could get another display upgrade

Another advantage of using such a kind of display is the possibility of Apple giving the iPhone an Always On Display feature — a feature that has been present on Android devices since years! With a display capable of going down to 1Hz, Apple could give the Pro iPhones the ability to show Always On Display widgets, just like you can use on Samsung devices. Apple already uses such a panel on the Apple Watch Series 7 wherein it can conserve battery life by dropping the refresh rate down to 1Hz for the Always On Display faces.

That said, there is a high chance that Apple may not consider bringing an AOD feature to the iPhone 14 Pro — the feature is a battery hog despite all the advancements. Keeping your phone’s display always on to show time and other information may drain more battery, and even lead to issues like OLED burn. Hence, Samsung, Oppo, Xiaomi and other manufacturers offer the default option of the AOD screen coming up only when you tap the display.
