LG’s NFC certification for the rollable phone appears online

It doesn’t mean the phone is going to launch, though.

LG Rollable (LG)

You already know that LG has exited the smartphone business. Before its departure, LG did make attempts to resurrect the portfolio with a few ambitious phones, including a swivelling LG Wing. Another phone that had gained wide attention was a rollable phone. The handset was supposed to launch later this year, but it’s highly unlikely it will ever see the light of the day. Now, leakster Mukul Sharma has published the NFC certification for the rollable phone.

GSMArena, however, points out that the listing does not confirm the launch of the phone. But it does point that the phone was “far along” in the development. The certification date is also from January. It suggests the company did plan a commercial launch, and in multiple markets.

It is worth noting that LG has already confirmed it had abandoned plans for the rollable phone project and a successor to LG V60.

“Not sure how authentic those images are but neither device will be developed any further,” an LG representative told Android Authority, referring to purported images of the two devices doing the rounds online.

Interestingly, leakster FronTron (via XDA Developers) had published alleged live images of the LG rollable phone. The images gave some clue about the possible design of the phone. For instance, the phone had bezels at the top and bottom. There was a gap in the top bezel that would probably house the front-facing camera. Take a look at the photos below:

While LG is unlikely to launch new devices in the coming months, the company has promised its users to provide software updates. It would offer updates for at least three years to select handsets released in 2019 and later. The so-called three-year pledge is applicable on phones such as G Series, V series, Velvet, and Wing. Select 2020 models such as LG Stylo and K smartphone series will receive at least two OS updates.
