Microsoft Edge Canary for Android adds support for website screenshot tool

Microsoft has taken a truly cross-platform approach with its Edge Browser, developing the software not just for Windows and macOS, but also iOS, Android — even Linux systems like Ubuntu and Fedora. The company recently released the ‘Canary’ or unstable, developer version of its browser for Android devices on the Play Store, and now the first experimental feature has made its appearance.

The Canary versions of Edge (and Chromium, Google’s open-source browser engine on which Edge is based) are where the company’s developers test out new features as they are being worked on – before they make their way into the Dev and Beta channels, and eventually to the Stable release. The company has now begun testing the ability to take screenshots of websites built into the browser on Android, as spotted by Windows Central.

If you’ve spent some time using Edge on a desktop or laptop computer, the screenshot feature would be one of the first features to catch your attention. Microsoft appears to be working on adding similar functionality to the browser, which would eventually allow users to screenshot a website or take an extended screenshot of the mobile site, just like Safari does on iOS devices.

However, given that the browser’s Canary version was only recently released for Android and this is the first noticeable new feature to appear on the new builds, it is still a little rough around the edges — you can’t capture an extended screenshot of the whole page like you can on the desktop version. However, appears to be more than enough time for Microsoft to refine and improve on the feature as it could be a few months before the feature makes its way to the stable version of the browser for Android.
