Motorola demonstrates its remote charging technology

Xiaomi earlier today showed off its remote charging technology called ‘Mi Air Charging Technology’ that doesn’t require any charging cable or pad. Another company has now demonstrated wireless over-the-air charging in a hands-on video.

Motorola has posted a video on Weibo (via XDA Developers) demonstrating its wireless charging technology. The remote charging station is called “Motorola One Hyper” and it’s placed 80cm and 100cm away from two smartphones that are both the Motorola Edge. Both the smartphones are placed in front of the charging station at their specified locations.

Motorola also shows that the remote charging stops working when a person’s hand is kept in front of the charging station. This is unlike Xiaomi’s Mi Air as the company said charging cannot be interrupted even if there are objects in between.

Motorola hasn’t shared details on how its remote charging technology other than the video demonstration. The company hasn’t revealed any plans either on the commercial launch of this charging technology.

Xiaomi had a more detailed explanation on its remote charging technology. It can charge multiple phones at the same time and at 5W charging speed each. While Motorola specified the distance, Xiaomi has only mentioned “several meters”. Xiaomi plans to add support for smartwatches, bracelets and other wearables in addition to smartphones. It's bigger plan is to equip all smart home devices with its remote charging capabilities. Xiaomi too is yet to announce plans on a commercial launch for Mi Air Charging Technology.
