Samsung Galaxy S23 with MediaTek chips? Yes, that is what the latest rumours suggest. Samsung has already been using MediaTek chips for its affordable Galaxy A, Galaxy M and Galaxy F series devices, and now it could do the same for its S series devices. Based on reports emerging from Korea, Samsung is considering using MediaTek chips on its Galaxy S22 FE and the Galaxy S23 series. These chips will mostly be used for the Asia-Pacific market region.

The report from Business Korea suggests that Samsung is considering using MediaTek chips for half of the total palled units for its Galaxy S22 FE in Asian markets, and also for half of the Galaxy S23 units sold in Asia. No particular names have been given yet for the chipset of choice but we won’t be surprised to see the Dimensity 9000 series chips doing duty on the Galaxy S22 FE.

“Samsung is considering installing MediaTek’s APs in the Galaxy S22 Fan Edition (FE) and the Galaxy S23, which will be rolled out in the second half of 2022. It is expected to use MediaTek’s APs for about half of the Galaxy S22 FE smartphones and for the Galaxy S23 smartphones to be sold in Asia,” says the report.

MediaTek has been doing flagship-grade chips for a few years now and most Asian brands have been actively using these chip to achieve lower costs without compromising on performance. This year’s Dimensity 9000 actually compares with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip on benchmarks, which isn’t surprising since it uses these same Cortex cores in a similar layout.

It is weird to see Samsung opting for MediaTek chips when it has been doing its Exynos chips. Has Samsung figured out that the Exynos chips aren’t enough and it needs to have an alternate chipset partner other than Qualcomm?

The company has been differentiating its chipset choices this year. For example, the Galaxy S22 series got to see the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chips in India this year, which is in stark contrast to the evergreen choice of Exynos chips that India had gotten prior to that. However, the Galaxy S21 FE carried on the Exynos 2100 chip from last year.
