US telco Verizon earlier this year had launched a Yahoo-branded mobile phone service called Yahoo Mobile with unlimited LTE data for $40 per month. Months later, Verizon has launched its first-ever Yahoo-branded smartphone, ZTE Blade A3Y.

According to reports, the $50 Yahoo-branded phone from Verizon is a re-skinned version of $59 ZTE Blade A3 Prime, which is also available on Yahoo Mobile site. As expected, Verizon has customised the interface to offer preloaded Yahoo suite of applications, which include Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Finance, and Yahoo News. The interface has been optimised to have these apps run faster. Verizon is also bundling free access to Yahoo Mail Pro, an advertisement-free version of the email service.

“Yahoo Mobile made the perfect color choice with their first smartphone exclusive. The purple Blade A3Y phone is bold and lively, and that is exactly what Yahoo Mobile brings to the U.S. market with their fresh personality and approach,” said Brad Li, CEO of ZTE USA in a post. “Together we are filling a void by providing devices that empower underserved communities and individuals to connect and rise above current limitations.”

As far as specifications go, the phone has a 5.45-inch HD display with archaic thicker bezels on the top and bottom. Running on Android 10 out-of-the-box, the Yahoo phone is powered by an MTK6761 quad-core processor coupled with 2GB of RAM. The phone comes with 32GB built-in storage. It also houses a microSD card slot to support up to 2TB of expandable storage.

The handset has an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. A 2,660mAh battery powers the phone. Other specifications include USB Type-C support, 3.5mm headphone jack, and Bluetooth 4.2 LE.

Verizon had purchased Yahoo for $4.48 billion in 2016. The company later combined Yahoo with AOL to launch Oath. The new venture, however, failed to take off, compelling the company to launch a Verizon Media to replace the Oath brand.
