Xiaomi wants you to pick the no-charger edition of Mi 11 but customers think otherwise

Xiaomi launched their first flagship of 2021, the Xiaomi Mi 11, that went on sale in China yesterday. The Mi 11 is the first smartphone to come with the Snapdragon 888 SoC and was announced on December 28.

As we reported yesterday, within five minutes of going on sale, 350,000 units of the Mi 11 were sold. Now, Xiaomi had a “Green Edition” of the Mi 11 which was the smartphone bundle without the charger. Of all the orders placed yesterday for the new device, only a fraction of it was for the no-charger bundle. It looks like while Xiaomi might be wanting to push customers to pick the Green Edition, the buyers have other plans.

After mocking Apple for leaving the charger out of the iPhone 12 series’ boxes, Xiaomi announced that the Mi 11 will not be shipping with the charger by default. But unlike Apple, Xiaomi gave customers an option to get the charger for free, for a limited time only, if they wanted.

The bundle with the free charger is called the Special Set Edition and comes with a 55W GaN charger that costs 99 yuan ( ₹1,107 approx). However, this is only a limited time promo offer. Once the promotions are over, Xiaomi hasn’t mentioned when that’s going to happen though, the Special Set Edition (Mi 11 and the charger) is going to sell for 4099 yuan ( ₹45,860 approx) instead of the 3999 yuan ( ₹44,741).

Xiaomi released a press statement on Weibo that said that 20,000 orders on the first day of sale were for the “Green Edition” of the Mi 11. That accounts for less than 6% of the number of devices sold on day one, which was 350,000 as Xiaomi has announced already.

Xiaomi thanked these 20,000 buyers in the press release for choosing to make the world a better place and also mentioned that the company had been considering going charger-free since 2015 and had not actually gone ahead with the decision till now.
