ZTE Axon 20 5G, more details about the first commercial under-display camera phone revealed

ZTE has already announced plans to launch a new smartphone with an under-display camera in China next month. Called ZTE Axon 20 5G, the smartphone is said to be the world’s first commercial smartphone with an under-display camera. Ahead of an official launch, a render of the phone has appeared online, giving a much better look at the phone.

Shared by a Dutch website, the render reveals ZTE Axon 20 5G comes with no cut-out or notch whatsoever. The render also shows the back panel of the phone which has a vertical camera module up left corner followed by ZTE branding. The back panel appears to have a radiant look and feel, as seen in some of the older Realme and Redmi phones.

Another render shared by ZTE’s president of mobile devices Ni Fei shows multiple black dots under the display that may work as the camera sensors.

In terms of specifications, ZTE Axon 20 5G is said to launch with a large 6.92-inch full HD+ OLED display. The phone runs on an octa-core processor coupled with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB storage. It could be backed by a 4,120mAh battery.

On the back, it will have four cameras including a 64-megapixel primary sensor + 8-megapixel sensor and a couple of 2-megapixel cameras. The front under-display camera will be a 32-megapixel sensor.

Race for under-display camera

Smartphone companies have long aimed at delivering an all-screen phone to consumers. For now, they’ve relied upon workarounds such as pop-up camera mechanisms. The waterdrop notch is also getting fast replaced by punch-hole cameras on the front.

Apart from ZTE, Oppo and Xiaomi have also shown interest in developing an under-display camera phone. Huawei is also said to be working on a similar under-display camera phone.

Last year, Oppo had shown a prototype of an under-display camera phone. The company had then cautioned that the technology was still in its early stages and was far from perfection.
