Google and Microsoft have been working together to make spellcheck on Chrome and Edge browsers better. The latest versions of these two browsers are now equipped with built-in Windows Spellcheck feature. This is better than the older Hunspell open source implementation support.

The switch in what’s (who is, rather) checking your spellings within Chrome and Edge means better support for URLs, acronyms, email addresses and an improved shared custom dictionary.

“This feature was developed as a collaboration between Google and Microsoft engineers in the Chromium project, enabling all Chromium-based browsers to benefit from Windows Spellcheck integration,” explained Microsoft’s Edge team in a blog.

Don’t see the new spellcheck support? Here’s what you need to do:

If you do not see the new spellcheck support on Chrome, you might need to enable a flag to get it. Go to chrome://flags/ and search for “Use the Windows OS spell checker”. Once you get it, enable it and relaunch your Chrome browser.

Microsoft has been helping out Chrome and helping this browser, along with Edge, improve ever since it decided to switch to Chromium last year. There have been many little changes made over the time but user-facing changes like this one aren’t that easy to spot. For example, Microsoft has been helping Google improve Chrome’s tab management and is also working on making scrolling on Chrome better with bounce effects and percentage-based scrolling.
