1/5 Why does WhatsApp compress pictures while sharing it? This happens because in the Settings of the application the photo upload quality is set on auto by default, and therefore, the quality of the image while sharing depends on several factors like the internet connection, size of the image, and more. The app therefore, looks to downsize the image, which affects its quality. (PTI)

In case you have some sensitive information on WhatsApp and need a secret feature to hide that, then you are in the right place. However, sadly, there is no direct way to hide your WhatsApp chats, but having said that, there are quite a few hidden tricks that will help you to hide your chats and we explain them to you here.

How to hide WhatsApp chats with the archive feature

In the absence of the actual hide feature for chats, the archive comes as a special feature to fill that void. You can archive your personal or group chats and remove them from the main screen and hide them in an archived folder to refer to later whenever you want. This is a temporary trick to let your chats be saved secretly away from your main chat inbox which can be easily accessible by anyone. Here's what you should do:

  • Open WhatsApp on your phone
  • Then, select and hold on the chat you want to hide or archive.
  • Now, it will pop up several options. Tap on ‘Archive.'
  • It is done! You can do the same with all other chats that you want to archive.
  • However, you should note that to access these archived chats, you will need to visit the ‘Archived' section.

How to hide WhatsApp chats without the archive feature

If you do not wish to archive your chats, then there is another option that will keep all your chats safe from prying eyes! It is called the WhatsApp app lock. Know how to use this feature to keep your WhatsApp chats safe.

How to lock your WhatsApp app to hide messages

Step 1:

First of all, open WhatsApp, and then choose "Settings" while tapping on the three-dot option.

Step 2:

Then, select "Privacy" under "Account".

Step 3:

Now, simply tap on the "Fingerprint lock." It will give different options depending on the Android smartphone that you're using.

Step 4:

If your phone supports a fingerprint sensor, then toggle the option next to "Unlock with fingerprint."

Step 5:

Also, make sure to select how soon the app will perform this security measure such as "Immediately," "After 1 minute," and "After 30 minutes."

Needless to say, both these options are not the best choices, but till WhatsApp rolls out a better alternative, you will have to put up with this or go without. And you should definitely not hold your breath for WhatsApp to come to your rescue any time soon. Reason being that it takes months and years before a new feature is ready for a rollout to the public.
