It looks like Microsoft's highly awaited Windows 10 successor for single screen (and multi screen) devices may not come in the first quarter but instead arrive in the second quarter.

Windows 10X, Microsoft's biggest update to its desktop operating system was rumoured to arrive as early as the first quarter of 2021, but reports are now indicating that it could be pushed back as late as the second half of this year.

According to a report by Windows Central, the Redmond based company has pushed back the release of the much-awaited new software in an attempt to make sure that the product is “ready and robust for a smooth release” which suggests there might be a few hiccups that are making the software giant uncertain.

While none of these rumours have been confirmed by Microsoft, and there is barely any official information about Windows 10X itself, the report cites internal sources at the company, and it looks like the upcoming operating system hasn't received the expected “shipping build” status, which could happen in the coming months.

Windows 10X is expected to radically change how the desktop is used, allowing apps to be installed from the Microsoft Store and only UWP apps will be allowed. Users can also reportedly install Progressive Web Apps (or PWAs). The operating system will also bring a redesigned Start Menu and system apps.

We had recently reported that Microsoft was also working on added support for older “Win32” apps also referred to as legacy apps. As of today, it appears that Windows 10X can only run UWP apps that might be inconvenient for users as they are limited to the store, but the reason UWP and Store apps are better than existing apps is because they are properly ‘sandboxed' from each other so they are isolated, which is good for both privacy and security.
