Vivo joins fast charging race with 120W charger

Vivo is working on a phone that will support 120W fast charging. Oppo and Realme have also confirmed plans to launch high speed chargers.

Vivo's iQoo is working on a new gaming phone that will double down on fast charging capabilities. iQoo has posted a video on Weibo demonstrating a new phone that can power up in just 15 minutes. The 4,000mAh battery phone uses a 120W fast charger. The phone also can get to 50% charge in just five minutes. 

Smartphone companies are in a race to launch phones that are compatible with high-speed charging. The technology allows the companies to pack the standard 4,000-5,000mAh batteries without changing the form factor. Fast charging also allows users to less worry about the battery backup of a phone. 

Moreover, things such as 5G, higher resolution screens, and resource-intensive games are becoming a basic ask for a premium phone. Smartphone companies are also likely to push “120W charging” as the new USP for their future phones.

Vivo, however, is not alone in the fast charging race. Oppo has said it is working on a 125W fast charging solution which will be unveiled on July 15. Xiaomi is also working on a 100W fast charging solution.

Realme, in the meanwhile, has hinted at working on a 121W charging solution. The phone with the fast charging tech is expected to launch in India very soon.

For now, none of the companies has confirmed the names of the phones that will have fast charging technology. Looking at the recent spate of teasers, 100W+ fast charging for phones will become a reality soon.
