The arrival of 5G technology in India seems closer than ever before! Government expects to roll out indigenously developed 5G technology in the country by August 2022, Devusinh Chauhan, the Minister of State for Tele-communications said while speaking at the World Summit of Information Society (WSIS) 2022 in Geneva. Besides that, the minister also mentioned that the Indian government is also launching a research and development fund for the development of telecom technology.

"India has developed an indigenous 4G stack wherein 4G Core and Radio Access Networks (are) designed and tested in India. It helps the operators to choose any vendor, reduces the cost and enables easier expansions. Indigenous 5G stack is also expected to be rolled out by August 2022," PTI quoted Chauhan. He further said that India believes in the principle of Antyodaya, which means the development of the marginalised people belonging to the bottom of the pyramid.

The minister further explained that for development of reliable ICT infrastructure in India, around six hundred thousand villages are being connected through optical fibre cables. "Through use of satellite communication services and submarine cable networks, small and remote islands and other inaccessible areas are being connected," Chauhan added. The IT company TCS and state-owned telecom research company CDoT are working together in developing 5G technology indigenously, which is likely to be deployed on the BSNL network. 5G Technology coming to India?

This comes after a couple of weeks when the first successful 5G call, which was made by the Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at IIT-Madras. This showed a big step towards the preparedness of India for the 5G connectivity. The minister had posted a video on the microblogging platform Koo along with a caption, "Aatmanirbhar 5G! Successfully tested 5G call at IIT-Madras. Entire end to end network is designed and developed in India." Also Read: 5G ready soon! Not just that, he also mentioned that India's own 5G stack will be ready around September-October during an event organised by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). While, earlier, PM Narendra Modi shared his views about the need for India to tap into these technologies and mentioned that the country is aiming to deploy 6G technology by the end of this decade.
