First celebrated in the United States in 1970, Earth Day has grown into an annual global event to help spread environmental awareness.

Events are being held all over the world this year, including a cleanup of the Great Wall of China, planting olive trees in Iraq and building and installing wind turbines in Peruvian communities.

Google has also created a new Doodle of a spinning earth with various animals and animations inside the Google letters.
