Google has partnered with Otter.ai for live transcriptions and closed captions on Google Meet. Otter.ai has a new Chrome extension that can be used to automatically transcribe Google Meet calls in real time.

Otter.ai's new Chrome extension works with all of its plans so even free users will be able to use it. All Google Meet transcriptions will be saved to your Otter account which you can access later. You'll have to first download the Otter.ai Chrome extension through this link, and then open Google Meet on the browser.

Once it's installed you'll see a ‘Live Notes' panel that will appear in Chrome during Google Meet calls. It appears on the side of the Google Meet screen but you can move it around the page. You can tap the record button on the Otter.ai extension once the Google Meet call starts. The transcription will start filling in real time. You can also decrease and increase the text size of the transcription.

This Chrome extension also offers closed captions which can be activated by clicking the “cc” button. Google Meet has been providing closed captions for all its calls since 2019. It added support for more languages including French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish. The integration of Otter.ai in Google Meet can be a handy tool for users who regularly conduct meetings and conferences.

Zoom also announced its partnership with Otter.ai last October for live captions. This feature is however, available only to Zoom Pro subscribers or higher. It can be used for both video meetings and webinars.
