Entertainment and beauty

Mira!: Mobile video destination Vuclip has launched India's first mobile portal for women titled, Mira!. The portal draws quality content from almost 30 leading content providers in India and globally to offer free access to the best videos that cater to a woman's needs, within the comfort of her mobile phone. It features video content relating to entertainment, celeb-speak, fashion, astrology, cooking recipes and more. The entertainment portal can be accessed from any internet-enabled mobile phone.

Beautylish: When it comes to makeup tips and hair styling trends, beauty enthusiasts must check out Beautylish. This app has instructional videos on styling and makeup that are easy to follow and it also has a section that reviews latest cosmetics. There are forums where you can post beauty and makeup queries to experts, who promise to answer it promptly. There is a regular newsletter that contains exclusive events, new products and expert tips. You have to sign up for it. It is available on Android and iOS based smartphones.

Safety first
Bsafe:
A personal safety alarm, the app sends an emergency SMS to your chosen contacts by pushing a button. The free version allows you to build a safety net of 'Guardians' who will receive your SOS text message. A guardian you pick will receive a phone call. All guardians receive an SMS with a link to a map showing your location via GPS. You can also programme a fake incoming call. The app is available on both Android and iOS.

Fight back: Whypoll, a non-profit organisation, has launched an innovative smartphone app for women that allows them to immediately alert friends and family if they feel they are in risk. Called the 'Fight Back' app, it allows users to send SOS message via SMS, e-mail and Facebook by pressing a single key. Once recipients get the SOS message, they can track the sender's location via GPS. Users can subscribe the Fight Back app for R100 a year. The app is currently available in English language, but it will soon support other Indian languages too. Available in Delhi, the app makers will expand its reach to other cities by the end of 2012.

Travel
Tripalong:
With more women travelling regularly, the need for travel apps is often felt. "Increased financial independence has enabled Indian women to indulge their travel bug. Many women are keen on exploring places on their own or with a group of fellow women-travellers. Travel apps are helpful in providing information and entertainment for such occasions. To cater to this need, MakeMyTrip launched Tripalong, a multi-airline social seating app. This app assists travellers to connect with their friends while travelling by integrating popular social networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn and informing the customer of possible 'intersections' with their network during any upcoming travel," says Manish Kalra of MakeMyTrip.
