iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 47% larger image sensor than the iPhone 12, teardown reveals

The iPhone 12 Pro Max with the 6.7-inch display has more than enough space for a generous battery. There is also an L-shaped power pack inside the iPhone 12 Pro Max which is slightly smaller than that Apple used on the iPhone 11 Pro Max last year, as per reports and iFixit’s teardown. But, there are some good things going on here too - like a huge camera assembly with three sensors and the LiDAR unit.

On the surface, the iPhone 12 Pro Max might seem like an oversized iPhone 12 Pro, but iFixit’s teardown has revealed that there are quite a few changes inside. The iPhone 12 Pro Max got a 6 on the repairability score too.

The L-shaped battery on the iPhone 12 Pro Max, same shape as the one on the iPhone 11 Pro Max, comes with a 14.13 Whr instead of 15.04 Whr.

The massive camera module on the iPhone 12 Pro Max comes with three sensors, the new sensor-shift image stabilisation that involves no less than four magnets, and a LiDAR unit.

The teardown revealed that the new smartphone is “fairly modular” and the components are easy to replace overall. As per reports, the screen and battery are both easy enough to replace, but there are “some uncommon screws” that complicate things.

Since the iPhone 12 Pro Max is waterproof, it is less prone to damage by liquids but “various repairs” are now “harder to complete”. Most importantly, for most users, the glass back has the same problem as all other glass backs - if you break it then the whole case will need to be replaced.
