Yesterday, on May 24, a new leak surfaced regarding the upcoming Apple iPhone 14. The leak revealed that Apple might be ditching its Chinese supplier for front-cameras and could instead be switching to LG Innotek. The Korean company was already going to supply the front cameras for the iPhone 15 series but it seems that Apple has decided to prepone the process by making them one of the key suppliers when it comes to the front camera. And while this iPhone 14 upgrade comes with a variety of perks, it can also come with a significant price hike. The question is, whether the buyers will find the price hike justified or not. This latest rumor regarding the iPhone 14 front camera upgrade was first reported by the Korean news website ET News which not only talked about Apple switching the supplier but also about the cost element that it can bring to the table. According to the report, this switch will turn the Apple font-cameras from a “low-end” component to a “high-end” component. And this advancement will cost about three times more than at present.
The same report states that the iPhone front-cameras, including the ones in the iPhone 13 lineup, were considered low-cost hardware. It was majorly supplied by Japan’s Sharp and an unnamed Chinese company. Now, while Sharp retains its position as a supplier for Apple, LG Innotek might be replacing the Chinese company as per the report. This will add some new features to the iPhone 14 selfie prowesses, but exactly what they might be remains unknown as of now. The iPhone 14 leak only mentions the addition of an “autofocus (AF: autofocus) function to the front camera”. Also read: Let us talk about this iPhone 13 successor, will it be WORTH buying
There are speculations regarding other improvements it may offer. According to a TechCrunch report, the camera can have a higher resolution, have a larger sensor or see other improvements. But these improvements will add a significant cost-factor to the production of the devices and it is likely that it will be passed on to the customer. While selfie lovers might see a value in this, it remains to be seen if general public opinion coincides with it.
However, this will likely not be the only reason for a price hike and the upcoming Apple smartphone might see a range of upgrades. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max versions are rumored to feature a notchless display and come with a dual hole and a pill shaped cutouts to house the front camera and FaceID. The new cutouts could have been added to the smartphone to adjust the new LG Innotek sensors as well.
Do note, at the end of the day, it is just a leak and no official confirmation on the information has been received. By the time the iPhone 14 series is announced this may or not stand true. So, do take this information with a pinch of salt.
