LG earlier this year wowed everyone with its first-ever rollable smartphone. After the demonstration at the CES 2021, there have been speculations on when the device will commercially launch. Now, a new report says the phone may never see the light of the day.
According to the Korean Herald, LG is still developing the rollable phone. As of now, it has not decided the detailed plans for the launch, added the report. LG, however, added that it was “open to every possibility.”
The report pointed out that there were already apprehensions about the future of the rollable phone. LG too added fuel to the speculation when it confirmed it was exiting the smartphone business. The report further said that LG may choose to abort the project altogether after the poor response to its ambitious T-shaped swivelling LG Wing smartphone.
According to the report, LG has managed to sell just 100,000 units of the LG Wing since the launch in September. LG’s operating losses have also ballooned over the years.
Just a quick recap, LG Rollable comes with a display that slides upwards for a bigger tablet-like design. The display unfurls when the user holds the phone in a landscape mode. When fully unfurled, LG Rollable morphs into a tablet.
Apart from LG, brands such as Oppo are also working on rollable phone concepts.
