Oppo X 2021 concept smartphone with rollable screen: Everything you need to know

While Samsung and Motorola became popular names in the foldable screen smartphone segment, oppo is trying to make a mark in the slider screen handset market. At its INNO Day 2020 event, the Chinese tech firm showcased its OPPO X 2021 concept smartphone. This has a continuously variable rollable OLED display, which uses company’s own Roll Motor powertrain to expand from a 6.7-inch canvas to a 7.4-inch phablet. 

The Roll Motor powertrain has two motors that uniformly extend the extra screen, making sure that the panel is not damaged in the process. The flexibility comes in the form of the ability to unroll the screen as much as you want instead of set slider locks. Oppo adds that the smartphone doesn’t have any visible folds as well because of the slider on the display side with a 6.8 mm arc.

However, since the panel is rollable, it is not as rigid as the screens you see in foldable handsets. For this, the firm has Warp Track screen laminate. It’s made of high-strength steel and is 0.1mm thick at its thinnest. The laminate placement forms like a caterpillar track behind the screen to add to the strength.

But Oppo is not just done with a slider screen on X 2021. It has also developed 2-in-1 Plate display support technology that apparently shows the content on either side of the screen. What’s more is that there is a dynamic frame at the back consisting of an outer fixed frame and a sliding frame within so the sliding mechanism is protected.

All said and done, this is still a concept smartphone for now. Oppo has applied for 122 patents during its development and 12 of them are based on the rolling mechanism alone.
