Twitter will now let users start and host spaces on its Android client.

Clubhouse may have enjoyed most of the limelight last year, making its social audio application format, but if the first quarter is 2021 is any indication, the company is going to have a lot of competition from major social networking rivals. While Facebook is working on a couple of audio apps, Twitter is now allowing users to create Spaces on Android devices as spotted by Android Police.

While this is something that iOS users have been able to do for a while now, Android users could only join a space if they had the stable version of Spaces installed on their phones. With the arrival of the hosting features on Android, Twitter has beaten Clubhouse to bringing a fully functional social audio service to Android users, but it is hardly the first to do so — Telegram, Facebook, Discord and Reddit are all working on alternative apps.

If you want to host a Space on Android, you will first need to update to the latest version of Twitter for Android from the Play Store. You don’t have to sign up for the beta version or sideload any APK files as the feature is now accessible on the stable version of the app. You will also need to make sure you have granted the microphone permission if you haven’t already used a feature like Voice DMs.

Once you are ready to create a Twitter Space, you can then tap the floating action button that you use to compose a tweet, then tap the Spaces icon, which should show you a new floating sheet introducing you to Twitter Fleets. After entering the name of your Twitter Space, you can add 10 other users as speakers while the remaining people can join in as listeners and promoted to speak at any time.
