YouTuber breaks iPhone 12 Ceramic Shield display to know its toughness

Besides the improved camera performance in new iPhones and the new MagSafe charger support, Apple also boasted a lot about the devices’ screen quality and toughness. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro come with identical OLED displays, which now use Ceramic in the mix so they are tougher to break and get scratches. So, one of the YouTubers decided to see how touch exactly can it get. So he used a force meter to break the screen of iPhone 12 and iPhone 11.

Using the force meter, it was revealed that while the iPhone 11 screen broke at 352N pressure, iPhone 12 resisted it till 443N. In the video description, the YouTuber even says that “To press down the extra ~100-ish N's on the iPhone 12 took quite a bit of effort. Based on this value, the iPhone's screen is tougher than most screen protectors I've used.”

In the scratch test, coins, keys and pocket knife didn’t result in any scratch on the OLED screen of the iPhone 12. Although the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness scratch kit gave a mark at no. 7, it still wasn’t as deep as what he got in iPhone 11. The back side has the same resistance as the front.

It’s worth pointing out that apple has not just used Ceramic on the screens of the new iPhone models but has also made the entire iPhone 12 Aluminium. As for iPhone 12 Pro, the side bezel strip around all four edges have a surgical grade stainless steel. This makes the device look premium and robust but is also attracts fingerprint sensor.
