Apple clarifies iOS 14.5 feature for Siri setting a default music service

Apple was spotted testing the ability to let users choose another music player as default in iOS 14.5 beta. This feature is similar to Apple allowing users to choose Gmail and Chrome as the default email and browser apps, respectively. But it has now clarified that it is not giving users the option to set another music service as the default.

This feature actually works through Siri asking users which music service they would want to use to play a song, album or artist. This isn’t necessarily Siri setting another music service as the default. This feature instead works on improving Siri’s understanding abilities for listening habits and providing suggestions accordingly, TechCrunch reported.

Apple clarified that Siri choosing another music player isn’t making it the default setting. Based on the user’s listening habits, Siri can ask users to choose a music player. This was confused as Siri setting a default music service. Apple also added that there is no existing iOS feature for a default music service like it does now with email or browser.

This feature also extends to podcasts and not just music. This makes Siri understand that users might prefer Spotify for podcasts and Apple Music for music or any other app for that matter. When Siri asks which service to use, it will present a list of available apps installed on the device. App developers can also choose to provide more information about why users might prefer their apps so Siri can understand listening habits better.
