Apple has quietly adjusted trade-in values: iPads, Apple Watches are worth more than Macs

Apple has quietly adjusted their trade-in values on the Apple Store online, so if you are looking to buy a new device and exchange an old one, you need to pay attention. The trade-in value is the amount of credit Apple gives you for older devices when you upgrade to newer ones.

According to reports, you can now get $40 ( ₹2,944 approx) more when you trade in an iPad but about $540 ( ₹39,747 approx) less when you trade in a Mac.

The new ‘adjusted’ rates were spotted by iMore and here’s how they go as far as trade-in values are concerned.

The iPad Pro is worth $525 in trade-in, up from $500. The iPad Air will get you anything between $210 to $250, while the iPad will get you anything between $200 and $240. The iPad mini, traded-in, will get you anything between $175 to $205.

Apple has also made the trade-in rates better for the Apple Watch, but only slightly. The Apple Watch Series 4 traded-in is now worth $150, up from $140. The Apple Watch Series 3 is now worth $95, up from $85. And the Series 1 is worth $35, up from $30.

While some trade-in values have gone up, Apple has cut down some others. Particularly the Mac lineup.

The MacBook Pro’s trade-in value is down from $1760 to $1530, the MacBook Air is down to $630 from $730, the MacBook is down to $380 from $450, the iMac Pro is down to $3,040 from $3580, the iMac down to $1,180 from $1,390 and the Mac mini is down to $830 from $930.

As 9to5Mac notes, “there’s what might appear good news on the Mac Pro front, but as iMore notes, it’s unlikely Apple has actually increased its trade-in values”.

The Apple Mac Pro has received a big bump up to $2930 from $1490, but “this could well indicate that Apple now accepts more recent models for trade-in”.

You can check out all the trade-in values here, and here’s the list for the India store as well. As Apple mentions in the fine print, all of these listed values are estimated values so you might not get the exact published amount if your device is damaged in any way.

Trade-in values vary based on the configuration of your device, condition and the year of purchase. And not all devices are eligible for trade-ins.

If you are looking to trade-in an older device for a new one, if you manage to strike a deal privately, you might actually be able to get a better exchange rate. But these authorised trade-ins are hassle free and no-risk.
