Apple’s next-gen battery case may charge iPhones wirelessly

Apple never launched it wireless charging pad, which it showcased a few years ago during the presentation. However, it may have a more ambitious plan – the plan to make two-way wireless Qi charging cases with no Lightning. 

It has been reported that the firm is working on a two-coil wireless charging technology for an iPhone battery case that doesn’t use a Lightning connector. In case you are using the official battery case for an iPhone, you would notice that it has a built-in Lightning connector to power the handset. It often becomes a problem in plugging it in during applying the cover and removing it. However, with wireless charging, this won’t be a problem anymore.

Although this tech is not a reality for now, a hint of it is seen in the patent that was awarded to Apple recently. The patent was filed back in May 2019 and describes the product as a smart battery case that will have two coils for bidirectional wireless charging. A battery case has first and second coils on opposing sides of a battery and has switching circuitry that is coupled between the first and second coils," the patent reads. It also reads that the case should use its built-in battery to power the iPhone using the second coil in an open state.

So, in all likeliness, if Apple has sorted it out, the next set of battery case chargers may not have a lightning port built-in but will charge our iPhones wirelessly.

Who know, these might debut alongside the upcoming iPhone 12 series as well in September or October.
