Microsoft Office 365 apps for Apple Mac are getting updated to improve their performances on the new Macbooks that come with Apple’s new M1 chip. Microsoft has announced in a blog that apps like Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Excel, OneNote, Word, PowerPoint etc are now optimised for the Apple M1 and have also been optimised to work with macOS Big Sur.
Alongside, there are changes coming to Outlook for Mac that will allow users to add iCloud accounts to Outlook along with their other accounts.
Microsoft has released new versions of its core flagship Office apps including Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Outlook, word etc to run faster and take full advantage of the improved performances on the new MacBook Air, the 13-inch MacBook Pro and the Mac mini.
Since these new Office 365 apps are “universal”, Microsoft has explained that they will continue to run on Macs with Intel processors as well and have been redesigned to match with the new design on the macOS Big Sur.
For everyone with automatic updates turned on will start receiving updates for the Microsoft Office 365 apps soon. In case you don’t, you need to head over to the App Store and turn on Auto Updates and you will get the new versions as soon as they roll out.
Microsoft has also mentioned in its blog that a new Office Start experience for Microsoft 365 for Mac apps like PowerPoint, Excel, Word and OneNote etc that incorporates the Fluent UI design system is going to roll out next month.
And then there is the support for iCloud accounts for the new Outlook for Mac. This update will allow users to add iCloud accounts to Outlook and organise work, personal emails, calendars and contacts together in one place.
Besides this, Microsoft is also working on Microsoft Teams universal app support for M1 Mac machines. The app is currently available in Rosetta emulation mode on Mac machines with M1 and the browser.
There is a new ‘Tell Me' search box that “quickly gets you to the Office tools you need or actions you want to take by just typing what you are looking for in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote for Mac”, Microsoft added in the blog.
Microsoft also said that it plans to roll out a new dictation toolbar with voice commands for creating content with your voice which is coming to Word and Outlook for Mac by early 2021. Also, users will be able to share calendars in new Outlook for Mac soon.
