Netflix reportedly working on Spatial Audio support for the Apple AirPods Pro and AirPods Max: Reports

Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Buds Pro may be the company’s best true wireless earphones to date, but they still face massive competition from Apple’s flagship AirPods Pro earphones which are about to get much better, according to reports.

Apple’s AirPods Pro includes a feature called Spatial Audio, which uses the device’s gyroscope to keep track of your head movements and then decide which direction to “send” audio in specific directions around you. Content providers can use this to create a surround sound-like effect that enhances your listening experience.

Netflix has been working on supporting the Spatial Audio feature on the AirPods since December, according to an anonymous leak originating from iPhoneSoft. It goes on to state that the feature might be available in the coming months, with an understandably limited catalog.

Samsung announced a similar feature called 360-degree audio, on its brand new Galaxy Buds Pro released on Thursday. However, since they were only just released, it will be a while before content providers are able to leverage the technology into their products. The AirPods’ Spatial Audio feature is already supported by Apple TV+, Disney+, and Hulu.

To make use of the feature, you’ll need either the AirPods Pro or the AirPods Max, plus at least the following devices (or higher) running iOS 14 - an iPhone 7, iPad Air 3, an iPad 6, an iPad Mini 5, or an iPad Pro. Availability of the feature itself may remain restricted to specific countries and languages, while users on cheaper Netflix plans may not have access to the feature at all - only the Ultra High Definition plan supports Dolby Surround Sound anyway.
