iPhones seldom bring cutting-edge technology and most of the time, Apple prefers to wait for a certain technology to mature before using it in its iPhone. Apple is set to prove that once again with the iPhone 15, which is still two years away. Based on some recent leaks, the iPhone 15 is most likely to get a periscopic zoom camera; something that is already available on Android phones since 2019.

The information comes via Ming-Chi Kuo, who has been credited with some of the most reliable iPhone leaks in the past. Kuo says that at least one iPhone 15 model will get the periscope camera lens system. While he does not name the exact model name, we think it could be the iPhone 15 Pro Max owing to its larger size allowing for more space inside to out a periscopic zoom camera.

iPhone 15 could get powerful zoom cameras

What remains to be seen is how much zoom range will Apple bake in the iPhone 15 periscope camera. Rival phone manufacturers usually offer an optical zoom range of up to 5X, and using software trickery to offer lossless zoom performance of up to 10X range.

While the periscope zoom tech is still two years away, next year's iPhone 14 Pro is expected to get larger 48MP camera sensors. Apple wants to offer 8K video recording with the next-gen iPhone. The bigger resolution of the sensor could also help with the image quality.

The rumour suggests that Apple could use the pixel binning technology to retain more details, especially in low light situations. However, Apple could stick to a 48MP resolution output in daylight and other well lit situations.

Note that Apple currently relies on 12MP sensors for its iPhone 13 models. The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini get the same 12MP resolution sensors from last year's iPhone 12 Pro Max. The iPhone 13 Pro models get newer and bigger camera sensors that offer superior low light camera performance.
