Vivo is making a phone with rear glass that changes colour

The company is using electrochromic glass to get that effect.

For all those people who get bored of things fast, particularly phone colours, Vivo is working on a very cool solution for you lot. The company has posted a video on Weibo where you can see a phone that can change the colour of its rear case with just the press of a button. The smartphone does not have a name or a release date yet, so we’d curb that excitement a bit.

Vivo said that it is using electrochromic glass to get this super cool effect. This is the same tech that OnePlus used on its Concept One phone to obscure its rear camera from view when not in use. The company showcased the concept phone off at CES 2020 where they used an electrical signal to make the glass go from tinted to transparent.

Vivo has taken this tech further and used to it change the colour of the glass rear on a smartphone.

Sure, a camera that appears and disappears is cool, but these shifting colours are cooler. Though the smartphone just oscillates between a white, then deep blue with a brief moment of turning lilac purple in the middle - it still looks great.

Another video on Weibo that does not have a tape covering the rear camera shows off a design that is very similar to what we have seen on the recently launched Vivo X50 smartphone that came with the built-in gimbal.
