Google-Jio partnership to 5G in India: Top announcements from Reliance's AGM 2020
Here's a look at the top five announcements made at Reliance's 43rd AGM today.
Reliance Industries 43rd Annual General Meeting took place earlier today. There were some major announcements made on Jio in areas like Jio Platforms, 5G and digital services.
One of the highlights of the AGM was Jio and Google's partnership in not only Jio Platforms but a new smartphone as well. There was a new hardware launch as well and a new streaming service. We take a look at the top five major announcements from Reliance's AGM today.
Google's investment in Jio Platforms
Google is the latest company to invest in Jio Platforms. Jio announced Google will invest ₹33,737 crore in Jio Platforms for a 7.7% stake. This brings the total investment from financial and strategic investors into Jio Platforms to ₹1,52,056 crore.
Jio-Google phone
The Jio-Google partnership will also result in a new and affordable smartphone which will be based on a customised Android operating system. The entry-level smartphone will be optimised for Indian users. Google already offers multiple customised services and features for Indian users. Jio also dominates the ‘smart' feature phone segment with its Jio Phone. There's no word on a launch date for the Jio-Google phone yet.
Jio Glass
The sole hardware launch at the AGM was Jio Glass which is a pair of smart glasses powered by mixed reality. The Jio Glass is pretty light weighing just 75 grams that can connect to the internet via a smartphone cable. It has support for 25 apps and all audio formats. The Jio Glass can be used for virtual meetings, share presentations and even interact with 3D and 2D avatars.
Jio 5G
Mukesh Ambani announced Jio has created its 5G solution from scratch. The company aims to provide 100% homegrown technologies and solutions with its “world-class” 5G network. Jio is currently 5G ready and it will start trials once the spectrum is available.
Jio TV+
Jio TV+ is the company's new video streaming service. The platform offers content from over 12 OTT players like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ Hotstar and Voot. Jio TV+ also has different sections for movies, shows, live TV, kids content and music. It comes with voice search support, and a single sign-in for all the 12 apps.
