The company is planning to launch a desk-conquering 34-inch QHD display with a 21:9 aspect ratio at next month's International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

As well as providing a seriously cinematic experience, ultra-wide monitors are great for giving users the benefits of a multi-screen set-up without losing valuable work space or adding to the already massive pile of snaking cables and demands for free power outlets.

Getting the most out of Windows 8 is easier with a dual monitor set-up, however, thanks to the way that its 'charm' menus are activated, users end up rolling the cursor off the screen altogether and onto the second monitor, rather than opening the menu or accessing the settings.

But as well as Windows, LG hopes that the UM95 Display will be taken seriously by Mac users. As such, the monitor features Thunderbolt 2, a superfast connection port (standard on Apple computers) that supports the transfer and editing of native 4K ultra-high-definition content. For non-Mac users there are also HDMI and DisplayPort connectors.

The UM95 offers a resolution of 3440x1440 pixels and will also be offered as a 29-inch model for those with available space issues.

LG won't confirm pricing until the International CES gets underway but it has confirmed that it will also be launching a range of slightly more affordable ultra-wide displays at the same event. Available with a 25-inch, 29-inch or 34-inch display, the UM65 range of models offer a slightly lower 4096 x 2160 HD pixel resolution.

However, for those for whom money is no object, LG will also be taking the wraps off the 31MU95, a 4096 x 2160 pixel, full ultra-high-definition, 31-inch display.
