Review: The Asus Zenfone 2 is slightly glitchy but still good

Asus is not known for its range of smartphones. But the Zenfone 2 may just be the device that gets its name up there among the big players. The phone’s sharp display and quick charging speed are hard to ignore, but equally difficult to ignore are a couple of awkwardly placed buttons. However, for a mid-budget smartphone, the phone multitasks well.

Asus is not known for its range of smartphones. But the Zenfone 2 may just be the device that gets its name up there among the big players. The phone's sharp display and quick charging speed are hard to ignore, but equally difficult to ignore are a couple of awkwardly placed buttons. However, for a mid-budget smartphone, the phone multitasks well.

What works: It scores top marks for appearance with its brushed metal finish - not exactly as flashy as other glossy bodies, nor quite matte. The 4 GB RAM enables the Zenfone 2 to perform several tasks simultaneously without lag. In addition to the sharp 13 MP camera, the phone's Pixel Master Technology helps in low light conditions. The smartphone is loaded with a variety of Asus apps for basic functions such as file manager, messaging, gallery, to-do notes, and so on, but we doubt users will let go of their usual preferences. Another essential pro is the charging speed - the battery charges from 30 per cent to 100 per cent in an hour (we tested at least four times).

What doesn't: The phone's biggest drawback is the placement of the power button and the volume control (or toggle) button. The power button -- placed on top of the phone -- and the toggle button at the back of the device will take some getting used to and in most cases, we think, never. While, its plastic-built body scores brownie points for cutting down the phone's weight, it also makes the phone more susceptible to dents and scratches.

Verdict: Is there room for improvement? Yes, but for a mid-range smartphone, Asus Zenfone 2 is loaded with useful applications and doesn't lag even with multiple apps at work.
