The app lets users post anonymously to friends and friends of friends.

Users would not know who is actually posting or responding - only that the poster is someone from their contact list.

"Thoughts have been shared across the country that are honest, moving, hilarious and contrary to expectations - rarely inappropriate.

'This reaffirms our belief that anonymity can foster positive change in the world," the app's co-founders David Byttow and Chrys Bader were quoted as saying.

They believe the intent is to provide a space where people feel safe.

"In this day and age, privacy and security are more important than ever," added Byttow in a Daily Mail report.

The app has raised some concerns over online privacy but the app makers are confident.

"'Secret' is working on unspecified new tools that would make users feel more confident about what they post," they explained.

We made this app by eliminating profile photos and names and by putting the emphasis entirely on the words and images being shared.

This way, people are free to express themselves without holding back, the founders said.
