Apple reveals new Qualcomm 5G modems that it plans to use in future iPhones and other devices

Apple stressed a lot on 5G connectivity while launching its iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro smartphones. Although these come with 5G support, a new teardown video from Weibo suggests it to feature Qualcomm’s X55 5G modem. However, a bit more information has leaked on to the web, thanks to Twitter user @dnywlsh and MacRumors. This time, the entire roadmap of Qualcomm’s 5G modem usage on iPhones is out. As it turns out, Apple plans to use Qualcomm’s 5G modems in its devices until 2024.

The excerpt in the screenshot mentions “Apple intends to commercially launch (i) New Models of Apple Products during the time period between June 1, 2020 and May 31, 2021 (the “2020 launch”), some of which use the SDX55 Qualcomm Chipset, (ii) New Models of Apple Products during the time period between June 1, 2021 and May 31, 2022 (the “2021 launch”), some of which use the SDX60 Qualcomm Chipset, and (iii) New Models of Apple Products during the time period between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2024 (the “2022/23 Launch”), some of which use the SDX65 or SDX70 Qualcomm Chipsets (each a “Launch” and collectively the “Launches”).”

This essentially means that Apple plans to use X55 modem in devices launched between June 2020 and May 2021, X60 modem for device launched between June 2021 and May 2022, and X65/X70 in devices launched between June 2022 and May 2024.

It is worth adding the Qualcomm’s x60 5G modem is expected to come with Snapdragon 875 later this year. This is also for the first time that we have heard about X65 and X70 modems. There’s no other information about them.
