Xiaomi-backed smartphone brand’s handset detailed, to feature Snapdragon 888

When Qualcomm recently launched its Snapdragon 888 processor for high-end smartphones, Xiaomi was quick to announce that it is already working on Xiaomi Mi 11 smartphone that will come with this SoC. Later, Redmi’s Lu Weibing also announced that a handset is in works with Snapdragon 888 processor. Now, details on the third handset has leaked by tipster Digital Chat Station.

As per the tipster’s Weibo account, Black Shark is one of the players that has Xiaomi as its major investor and is working on a handset with Snapdragon 888. This is not new as the official release by Qualcomm did mention Black Shark as one of the OEMs for Snapdragon 888.

However, the tipster adds that the device’s design itself will be one of the major features. There’s no confirmation as to what design is being talked about here and in what way will it be different from today’s bar handset designs. The second key feature of the upcoming Black Shark model will be its charging tech. Once again, there’s no word on the detail but we think it has more to do with fast charging.

It is worth adding that Realme and Oppo have also been vocal about launching phones with Snapdragon 888 processor. Some of the other OEMs confirmed by Qualcomm itself are ASUS, Lenovo, LG, MEIZU, Motorola, Nubia, Realme, OnePlus, OPPO, Sharp, Vivo and ZTE.

Although Samsung makes its own Exynos processors, some of its flagship phones in the US and other select regions come with Snapdragon chipsets. And it looks like the firm is indeed working on a device with Snapdragon 888. Sporting model number SM-G991U, Samsung Galaxy S21 is listed with a chipset dubbed as “Lahaina”, a codename for Qualcomm’s flagship chip Snapdragon 888 on Geekbench benchmarking website.
