Tech Wrap: Facebook virtual walkout, iOS 13.5.1 update and more

Apple released a new iOS update which patches the jailbreak bug. Facebook employees staged a virtual walkout to protest against Zuckberg’s lack of action on Trump’s posts. Sony postponed its PS5 event in light of the ongoing protests.

We also had new smartphone launches by Samsung while Google rolled out new features for its Pixel phones. The Indian government also announced new schemes for electronics production in India.

iOS 13.5.1 update

Apple’s latest iOS update fixes a critical flaw for a jailbreak tool that lets users download any app on their iPhones. Called 'Unc0ver jailbreak', this tool bypasses Apple’s secure “walled garden” to install any app on iPhones running even the latest iOS 13.

Facebook virtual walkout

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s response to Twitter flagging Trump’s tweets was that he wanted users to see the posts and decide for themselves. Facebook employees took a day off to stage their virtual walkout against Zuckerberg’s response. Some employees have also expressed their disappointment on Twitter.

New schemes

The government today announced a bunch of schemes to help boost electronics production in India. One of these is called the Production Linked Incentive that gives an incentive between 4% to 6% to companies producing locally. Then there’s one to boost electronic components and semiconductors in India. The government is also trying to lure big companies to set up base in India.

Sony PS5 event postponed

Sony’s PS5 event which was scheduled for June 4 has been postponed. Sony planned to reveal PS5 games for the first time at this event. The company said that now is not the time for celebration and more important voices need to be heard.

Galaxy M11, M01 launch

Samsung launched two budget phones in India. Galaxy M01 is priced at ₹8,999 while the Galaxy M11 starts at ₹10,999. The new phones come with Dolby ATMOS for audio and have the Samsung Health app pre-installed.

Google Pixel feature drop

Google’s Pixel phones have received a bunch of new features. One is an improved adaptive battery feature that learns your phone’s usage patterns. The ‘Clock’ app will now track your sleeping patterns and show you how much time you’re awake, and which apps you use past bedtime. Google also rolled out Assistant integration for the Recorder app.
