Apple released the latest macOS update, the Big Sur, last Thursday and the story has not exactly been very smooth since. A large number of older MacBook Pro users, the late 2013, 2014 13-inch MacBook Pro, have been reporting that the Big Sur update is bricking up their machines.

The MacRumours forum thread has a pretty large number of users reporting this issue and similar complaints have been reported by users on Reddit and Apple Support Communities as well indicating that this issue was widespread.

According to the complaints, users are reporting that during the process of updating to the macOS Big Sur, their machines get stuck displaying a black screen. Key reset combinations, including NVRAM, SMC, safe mode and internet recovery are all inaccessible, according to reports. This is leaving users no way to bypass the static black screen that they are dealing with just after trying to install the update.

It looks like a huge number of users facing this issue are those who own older MacBooks, particularly the late 2013 and 2014 13-inch MacBook Pro models. However, it is not clear exactly how many users of those models have been affected. Also, these are the oldest MacBook models that are supported by Big Sur.

One Reddit user noted that Apple support told them to book their MacBook Pro in for repairs and another user on the Apple Support thread said that the issue was escalated to the Apple engineering team so Apple is in all probabilities aware of the problem.

Till it is clear as to why this is happening, it is best for MacBook Pro owners with olders models to steer clear of the new update.
