This is what the 1st-gen iPod Touch with a glossy back would have looked like

Apple reportedly worked on an iPod Touch with a glossy back finish that never saw the light of the day. This was supposed to be the first-gen iPod Touch featuring the 2013 Mac Pro-like glossy back finish.

A prototype of what’s supposed to be the unreleased iPod Touch was shared on Twitter by Dongle Book Pro. There’s no Apple logo on this prototype of the iPod Touch. Up front it looks quite like the original iPod Touch but the rear is different with a glossy finish. Apple is said to have used the same coating as the one on the 2013 Mac Pro which was unveiled at WWDC featuring a cylindrical redesign.

Other than the glossy back finish, this iPod Touch prototype has the same display, charged with the 30-pin connector and also has a lock button. Apple may have scrapped this iPod Touch but it did go with the glossy finish on other mobile devices. These included the iPhone 3, Jet Black iPhone 7, and Space Black Apple Watch. The iPod Touch 1st gen was later launched in September, 2007, and it featured a mirror finish.

Apple launched the last iPod Touch in June, 2019. It features the same design as the previous gen but with performance upgrades. The 2019 iPod Touch runs on the A10 Fusion chip and is capable of launching ARKit apps and group FaceTime calls as well. Camera specs are however the same as the 6th-gen iPod Touch. Apple however increased the storage capacity on this iPod Touch up to 256GB. There's no word on whether Apple will launch a new iPod Touch in the future.
