Next-gen Apple TV may support 4K content at 120Hz refresh rate, code suggests

Apple is reportedly planning to bring a new version of its Apple TV as one of its key features has showed up in tvOS 14.5 beta code. Found by 9to5Mac, the next version of Apple TV, which might arrive sometime this year itself, could support 4K 120Hz video output. The code is said to have multiple instances of "120Hz and "supports120Hz," suggesting the arrival of this feature. The code was found in PineBoard, which is the name for Apple TV‌ interface.

Besides, the report adds that the next Apple TV may use HDMI 2.1 as the current HDMI 2.0 used in 5th-gen Apple TV is limited to 4K resolution at 60fps. Needless to say, the 120Hz refresh rate will work as expected only if you are watching a content in 120Hz and your TV also supports it. Better refresh rate might also improve gaming to some extent.

There is no word on when the next-gen Apple TV will launch. However, rumours indicate it to feature a faster processor and a redesigned remote. Also mentioned is that the next version may deliver console-like gaming experience and may bring it up against the Xbox Series X and PS5 experience.

For now, we are looking forward to Apple’s WWDC 2021 conference, which will be an online-only event. It will be held on June 7. This year, the firm seems set to introduce iOS 15, tvOS 14, watchOS 8, iPadOS 15 and macOS 12. With new OS versions and their developer betas, we may hear more about this feature.
