Xiaomi reveals the secret sauce for its Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition TV

A few days ago, we saw Xiaomi launch its first ever (also world’s first) transparent OLED TV called the Mi TV Lux. Although it grabbed a lot of eyeballs for its see-through glass screen and of course the price tag, Xiaomi didn’t reveal the secret sauce behind the technology. The first step was obvious. Take the entire processing unit, wires and everything else, and put them inside the round base at the bottom. This also includes the sound hardware.

Since everything was cramped inside the round base, Xiaomi had to work separately on the heat venting mechanism, as mentioned by a report (via GSMArena). So, there’s a heat sink at the base and in addition, the entire base is said to be dotted with vents to the heat levels stay under control.

As for the screen, it is apparently possible to make both LCD and OLED screens transparent. However, Xiaomi chose to go with OLED as it doesn’t require any backlighting. The firm uses RGBW matrix design wherein just half the panel is covered with pixels while the other half is transparent. And to bring some rigidity, the firm bonded the 55-inch panel with UV-curable glue and had a thin strip of metal running on the edges.

Other than its transparent design, the Mi TV LUX OLED Transparent Edition runs on a custom-made version of MIUI for TV. Xiaomi has optimised this MIUI to take advantage of the TV’s transparent display. The Mi TV also features Always-On which shows images and text when the TV is turned off.

Powering it is the MediaTek’s 9650 chipset that’s paired with AI Master Smart Engine image processing system.
