On Jan 19, details on a new Minecraft update was posted on its official website. Also known as Snapshots or a testing version of the game, this becomes the first update to be released in 2022 and is named 22W03A. While the update focuses largely on bug fixes, game mechanics changes and other minor tweaks, the biggest feature to come from the update is a new Minecraft command. You are going to love this new feature as it has the potential to change the game by quite a margin. This feature is called ‘placefeature’ and although quite a simple name, it does what the name suggests.

For the first time in Minecraft history, players will now be able to ‘place’ configured ‘features’ at a desired location within the world. Features are any in-game items that are used in world generation. These features can include anything from trees and blocks to complex elements like lakes of lava, monster rooms and End Islands. So now, instead of placing blocks individually to build a world, players can simply use these features and not only save time but also improve the overall aesthetics of scenarios.

What’s in the new Minecraft update

Revealing the update and its details, Adrian Ostergård, a product owner at Minecraft wrote in the post that “This snapshot contains tweaks to the world seed input and adds a new placefeature command. On top of that, it also fixes a bunch of bugs.” While bug fixes are pretty routine and there is nothing noteworthy to mention, there is the much talked about new Minecraft command.

The ‘placefeature’ command to Minecraft comes in as a creative tool that can be used in various ways to create custom regions and worlds. However, there are some limitations to its use. While most of the game’s configured features should work with this command, structures, creatures and NPCs will not work. With that being said, let us find out how to use this new command.

How to use the Minecraft placefeature command

The Minecraft command works like any other command in the game. Players on Minecraft can use the chat and type ‘/’ to open the list of all commands, which they can individually select. Placefeature will be added to this list. But it requires two variables to function. First, players need to add the <id> of the feature or select it from the menu, and then they need to use the [pos] or position variable to mark the coordinates where the feature will be placed. Using “~~~” will place the feature at the coordinates of the player. The new Minecraft update is expected to be a very popular addition to the game.

The Minecraft update is available for all the Java Edition users at the moment. An official release for all users should arrive in a few week’s time
