Google Pixel 5a expectations: Here’s what we know about specs, price, and more

The good news is that the Google Pixel 5a smartphone is going to be an “affordable take” on the Google Pixel 5 just as the Google 4a was.

While Google goes in all guns blazing with its flagship offerings every year, they also do an affordable take on those devices in the form of the mid-rangers, like what they did with the Google Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4a. Now, with the Google Pixel 5, it's time for the Google Pixel 5a. The Pixel 5a may launch in the market soon and there are a huge number of reports doing the rounds on what can be expected from it. We've rounded them all up for you here so as you get an idea about what's coming.

The Google Pixel 5a is expected to follow the same design we've seen on Pixel devices for years now. As per the leaked images, the Pixel 5a is going to sport a polycarbonate shell and there's a square camera module on the left corner. There's also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The design looks similar to what we saw on the Google Pixel 4a last year.

However, reports state that the back panel on the Pixel 5a might have a more “rubbery” feel this time instead of hard plastic. The 3.5mm audio jack is going to be on the top edge like it was on the Pixel 4a with the power button and volume rockers on the right. Like the Pixel 4a, the Pixel 5a is also going to be IP67 rated.

Reports also state that the Pixel 5a is going to have an edge-to-edge display with the front camera housed in a punch hole on the top left corner. The display on the Pixel 5a is being pegged at 6.2-inch OLED with an FHD+ resolution. The refresh rate on the Pixel 5a might be 60Hz as it was on the Pixel 4a or it could be 90Hz like it is on the Pixel 5.

Speaking of cameras, going by the images shared by Android Police, the Pixel 5a is going to have two camera sensors on the back with the LED flash housed in the square module. These sensors could be the same 12.2MP dual-pixel main and 16MP ultrawide that we've seen on the Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5. And of course, expect these cameras to come equipped with Google's computational photography chops.

Some reports suggest that the Pixel 5a is going to be powered by the Snapdragon 765G SoC, while others suggest that it might be the Snapdragon 750G SoC. The device is expected to come with a 6GB RAM and at least 128GB internal storage along with 5G connectivity. It should run stock Android 11 out-of-the-box. Some leaked components indicate that the Pixel 5a is going to have a 4,680 mAh battery, but there's no information yet about its charging speed or wireless charging support.

More colours may or may not be introduced later. The Google Pixel 5a might be announced today, August 17, with a release scheduled for August 26. We'll have to wait and see if that indeed, works out.
